In Yucatán, 35 out of every thousand women are diagnosed with breast cancer, above the national average of around 27, and this is thanks to factors such as access to health services, early detection programs, and awareness about the importance of mammograms, according to INEGI statistics.
According to the agency, other entities in Mexico, such as Chiapas and Guerrero, tend to register lower rates, since they lack early detection programs.
An example of support for women is the 16th edition of the “Súmate, Chécate, Tócate” campaign that was launched on October 4 by the Tócate Foundation and the Mérida City Council. This organization will organize a series of activities to mitigate the impact of this disease, which when detected on time can save the lives of hundreds of women. They will offer free mammographies, and fashion shows, among other actions to raise resources will be part of what organized civil society and the municipality will be carrying out.
The Tócate Foundation said that in Mexico some 23,000 women suffer from this condition, and it costs the public coffers 8,326 million pesos to treat it.
The president of the Tócate Foundation, Alejandra Gutiérrez Blanco, said that also part of the campaign with the alliance of self-service stores will join the roundup in favor of the cause, fashion shows to raise funds, as well as other actions that will benefit low-income women. Resources that cannot cover the costs of specialized studies to detect this disease in time.
In her turn, the mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, considered that the union between public bodies and organized civil society could contribute to the cause of the fight against breast cancer, an issue that is necessary for women and men.
One of the first actions that the city council will carry out, together with the Tócate Foundation, will be to illuminate the municipal palace of the Yucatecan capital in pink to remember the importance of prevention actions to combat this evil.
“Mérida dresses in pink to protect its women and men, we will have – during this month – we will have many care programs for the people of Mérida,” she indicated.
She explained that throughout the month the Mérida City Council will offer free mammograms; it should be taken into account that this service regularly has a symbolic price of 100 pesos.
In the vicinity of the Plaza Grande, a “mobile” mammographic will be available, starting October 10, where the pertinent studies will be carried out free of charge from 8 in the morning to 6 in the afternoon.
