Yucatán is currently among the five states in the country with the highest incidence of HIV, according to recent data provided by the state Ministry of Health. The number of people living with this condition continues to increase, raising alarms among specialists and civil society organizations.
Pablo Alemán Góngora, president of the Network of People Affected by HIV (Repavih), indicated that, although health authorities officially report 12,450 people diagnosed with HIV in the state, at least 300 new cases have been recorded so far this year alone, reflecting an alarming rate of infection.
According to Alemán, an average of 3.3 new infections per day have been documented as of March of this year, equivalent to one case every seven hours. The majority of these new diagnoses are among young people and young adults, underscoring the urgency of strengthening prevention and sexual education campaigns in the state.
The most affected age group is 25 to 29 years old, with 139 confirmed cases. However, the presence of infections among adolescents is also a concern: 28 young people between the ages of 15 and 19 have already been diagnosed in 2025, demonstrating that the virus is increasingly affecting younger ages.
Regarding territorial distribution, Mérida leads the list of municipalities with the highest number of reported cases, with 364 diagnosed individuals. Kanasín follows with 32, Progreso with 28, Tizimín with 23, and Umán with 16, suggesting that care should be expanded beyond the capital to encompass the entire region.
