Yucatán and Spain Strengthen Cooperation Ties in Development and Sustainability

Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena Meets with the Spanish Ambassador to Mexico, Juan Duarte Cuadrado

Mérida, Yucatán – To strengthen bilateral collaboration, the Governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, held a meeting with the Spanish Ambassador to Mexico, Juan Duarte Cuadrado. During the meeting, both parties agreed to continue promoting joint strategies in key sectors, such as trade, tourism, water, sanitation, and sustainable mobility, to benefit the Yucatecan population.

The meeting took place in the Portrait Room of the Government Palace, where the state leader received the Spanish diplomat and his delegation to follow up on ongoing projects. Among them, the work of the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS), in conjunction with the Indigenous Program of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, stands out. This program is currently improving water and sanitation services in 10 communities in the municipality of Tekax, benefiting approximately 4,000 residents.

Another topic discussed was the Action Plan for the Decarbonization of the Transportation Sector in Yucatán, developed by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy. This plan seeks to promote public policies and boost institutional capacities in key areas such as justice, security, social affairs, the environment, economy, and finance.

“This joint effort reflects the enormous potential for international cooperation in the state and reinforces the historical brotherhood we share with Spain,” Díaz Mena emphasized. He also emphasized that the Government of Yucatán is committed to reducing inequality through initiatives that transform the lives of its citizens.

Díaz Mena indicated that this bilateral relationship will continue to be strengthened within the framework of the “Mayan Renaissance” project, which seeks the comprehensive development of the region through the modernization of the Port of Progreso, the arrival of the Mayan Train, the promotion of clean energy, and the creation of well-being centers.

For his part, Ambassador Juan Duarte Cuadrado reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to Yucatán and the “Mayan Renaissance” project, noting that his country will continue to contribute to the fight against inequality by strengthening sanitation, renewable energy, and tourism projects.

The meeting was attended by prominent state officials and representatives of the Spanish government, including Dafne López Martínez, General Coordinator of Strategic State Projects; Alberto del Río Leal, Undersecretary of Competitiveness and Financing; Darío Flota Ocampo, Secretary of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR); Ermilo Barrera Novelo, Secretary of Economy and Labor (SETY); as well as cultural, political, economic, and educational advisors from the Spanish Embassy.
