Woman fakes car theft in Mérida to avoid paying rental fees

An intense police mobilization led to the alleged violent car theft in Mérida. It turned out that a woman faked a robbery to avoid paying for the rental car.

The incident occurred on the night of Monday, April 14, in a neighborhood located south of the Yucatecan capital, when the woman fabricated a story to evade her payment responsibility.

Initially, the woman stated that two people threatened her with a gun to steal her vehicle and 10,000 pesos in cash on a street in the Dolores Otero neighborhood.

The woman insisted that she had been the victim of a violent robbery where, in addition to being robbed of her money, they had also stolen her car while she was providing a ride-hailing service.

However, the police officers, who were interrogating her at the time, noticed inconsistencies in her statement.

Likewise, in the presence of the officers, she began searching through her belongings, where she found the aforementioned amount of money that had allegedly been stolen.

To clear up any doubts, the officers reviewed surveillance cameras from neighbors and businesses near the site of the alleged robbery but found no evidence of the crime, only the woman and a man without the vehicle.

Moments later, the car’s owner arrived at the scene and reported that she had rented the car to the driver for service through a digital platform, but that the driver hadn’t paid the corresponding amount.

Officers began searching for the car, which was found two blocks from where the driver was allegedly stolen. The woman was taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to give her statement.
