TOH Bird Festival 2025 kicks off in Merida

To continue to promote biodiversity conservation and the appreciation of birds, the program for the 24th edition of the TOH Bird Festival was presented this Wednesday, March 26th. This year, more than 40 activities are planned for April and November.

From the Roger Orellana Botanical Garden of the Yucatán Scientific Research Center (Cicy), María Andrade Hernández, general director of Pronatura, commented that the Festival is beginning the presentation of its program, and among the activities that will be held in general terms are courses, workshops, conferences, and birdwatching outings.

She noted that there will also be ecotourism outings, photography, and drawing contests, while the closing activity will be a bird marathon, a team competition, in addition to these activities that will take place in communities such as Sisal, Celestún, El Cuyo, Chuburná Puerto, Homún, Cuxtal, and Ek Balam. He added that, for this year’s edition, Ek Balam is the main venue, as determined by the organizing committee, to strengthen it as a community tourism destination. For this reason, activities will also be held there, such as the aforementioned marathon and birdwatching.

For her part, Maira Segura Campos, general director of CIcy, emphasized that this festival reminds us of the interconnection between living beings and their environment, a clear example of which is the Roger Orellana Botanical Garden, where 103 species of visiting and resident birds have been recorded, and which find refuge, food, and living space in the area.

“The rapid urban growth of Mérida forces us to reflect on the importance of beautiful green spaces like this one, havens of beauty, reservoirs of life, climate regulators, allies in mitigating environmental change, and a connection between us as individuals and the environment,” she mentioned.

She reiterated that bird preservation is an act of shared responsibility between Pronatura and partners like CICY, which is why she enthusiastically celebrated the start of the 24th edition of the TOH Bird Festival, whose program can be found on the event’s official Facebook page.
