The advancement of technology has improved many aspects of society’s daily life, but it has also made it much easier to access drugs, especially so-called hard drugs such as crystal and methamphetamines, according to experts.
Marijuana is no longer, as was thought for many years, the gateway to narcotics, since there are already other substances that are much cheaper and more accessible precisely due to the changes generated by technological advances, commented the advisor of the Youth Integration Center, Pedro Arango.
The expert said that, before, there was no other way to get drugs other than going to someone known as a dealer or distributor, which implied a risk, but now from the cell phone, via WhatsApp, the drugs arrive at the home.
“If you buy a good amount of drugs, you have no problem with them arriving at your home. That has undoubtedly changed things, as it has facilitated access not only to traditional drugs, but also to those that are considered dangerous such as crystal, methamphetamines, and even fentanyl,” he stressed.
In fact, he continued, it is already known that drugs such as crystal are manipulated with fentanyl to make them much more addictive, which makes them even more dangerous.
“Those who make this type of drug discovered, for example, that if you put fentanyl in the crystal, it enhances the effect and reaches the brain. The crystal alone does it, but with fentanyl it reaches all areas of the brain, to explain it better,” the specialist stressed.
The advisor added that, in addition to that, crystal is a very cheap drug and you can buy a dose for up to 30 pesos, “of course a dealer is not going to risk going to your house for 30 pesos, but here comes the issue of how cheap it is to access this type of substance.”
Yucatán reported that, in recent years, it has recorded an increase in drug dealing crime.
Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SNSP) indicate that in 2024, 462 complaints were registered for this crime, which represents an increase of 18.15% compared to the 391 complaints in 2023.
So far in 2025, 53 investigation folders have already been opened for drug dealing.
To this, Arango insisted, we must add the easy access we have today with technology and the changes in the behavior of drug sales and consumption.
