Semana Santa arrived in Campeche, with a significant influx of visitors.
According to Mauricio Arceo Piña, head of the secretariat, approximately 12,500 tourists from various states and countries arrived in Campeche during this period.
The economic impact is estimated at around 30 million pesos for the hotel, restaurant, and transportation services sectors. The majority of visitors are expected to arrive by land, but an increase in air travel due to flights operated by Mexicana de Aviación and Aeroméxico may also contribute to the growth of tourism numbers.
Notably, the San Francisco de Campeche station on the Mayan Train is anticipating a decrease of over 7,600 passengers. However, this figure is matched by an increase of 7,900 passengers in other areas of the train network. The hotel industry has reported positive results, with Campeche emerging as a top tourist destination due to its diverse offerings, including beaches, rivers, lagoons, and ecotourism.
Furthermore, safety concerns and international travel advisories for other states like Quintana Roo have driven tourists towards Campeche. Initial reports from the Airbnb system indicate a 40% occupancy rate across approximately 600 properties listed on the platform worldwide, representing an increase of around 15-20% compared to last year.
The influx of visitors during Easter is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Campeche, showcasing the state’s potential as a top tourist destination in Mexico. As tourism continues to grow and develop in the region, efforts should be made to ensure sustainable practices and infrastructure can accommodate this increasing demand.
