Report says Yucatán is immersed in informality and labor poverty

Yucatán is immersed in informality and labor poverty; a report indicates

In Yucatán, more than 50% of the population works in informal conditions, while 36.3% faces labor poverty.

According to the analysis of the portal “México, ¿Cómo Vamos?”, labor informality in Yucatán reaches 57.3%, placing it above the national average. This indicator shows a disconnection between economic growth and the quality of employment since the majority of workers do not have social benefits or legal protection.

36.3% of workers in the state do not receive sufficient income to cover a basic food basket, which places Yucatán in a critical position in terms of labor poverty.

Despite a formal employment rate of 86.2%, labor conditions that limit access to sufficient income persist, according to the same analysis.

Labor gap in Yucatán

The labor gap is especially noticeable in the participation of women and young people. The lack of adequate formal jobs for these groups increases their participation in the informal economy, which perpetuates inequalities in the state.

Yucatán registered an economic growth of 3.5% during 2023, driven by the tertiary sector, however, labor indicators, such as high informality and labor poverty, limit the positive impact of this growth on the quality of life of the population.
