The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur) has announced an ambitious project to modernize and maintain the infrastructure of the Cancun Hotel Zone. This strategic approach seeks to guarantee the destination’s competitiveness internationally without compromising its long-term sustainability.
Bernardo Cueto Riestra, head of Sedetur, stressed that the priority is not to expand hotel capacity but to renew the existing infrastructure. This strategy balances tourism development with environmental protection, promoting a sustainable development model.
The Ministry of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan) has assigned an annual budget of 230 million pesos (11,062,478 USD) for the maintenance and operation of the Hotel Zone in 2025. In addition, additional resources are being managed to improve wastewater treatment plants, a project that will require a larger investment.
The official explained that although the treatment plants received maintenance last year, the plan for 2025 includes improving them or building new ones to guarantee their optimal operation. This effort is key to protecting the region’s ecosystems and ensuring the efficient use of water resources.
The actions and decisions related to the project are supervised by the Technical Committee of the Trust for the Strengthening of Tourist Activity in Quintana Roo (Foatqroo). This committee includes representatives of the state and municipal government, as well as hoteliers, merchants, restaurateurs, and residents of the Hotel Zone.
Among the measures contemplated are the regulation of new developments and the implementation of clear responsibilities for builders. The objective is to guarantee that any work respects the load capacity of the destination and contributes to the maintenance of the existing infrastructure.
To ensure the efficient use of resources, tenders will be launched aimed at companies specialized in maintenance and operation services in the area. Additionally, the trust will guarantee transparency in each investment, ensuring that the funds directly benefit the sustainable development of Cancún.
Any private investment must also meet strict conditions, such as respecting the load capacities of the destination and contributing to the maintenance of infrastructure. These actions seek to promote responsible collaboration between the public and private sectors.
