Progreso City Council seeks to raise awareness on Gender Violence

The Progreso City Council, through the Municipal Women’s Institute (IMM), commemorated Orange Day this Friday, April 25th, a global initiative that seeks to raise awareness about preventing and eradicating violence against women and girls.

As part of this awareness-raising event, an exercise was conducted with public servants. In addition to showing solidarity with the movement by wearing an orange garment, they were invited to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviors, as well as to actively participate in actions that promote respect and equality.

Luz Geovana Padrón Martínez, head of the IMM, noted that Orange Day is commemorated on the 25th of each month and called for visibility into an issue that affects millions of women around the world. She noted that gender-based violence not only has physical consequences but also emotional and psychological ones, seriously impacting the health and well-being of those who suffer from it.

Following Mayor Erik Rihani González’s mandate and in line with the objectives of the municipal program “100xProgreso,” the initiative seeks to strengthen these initiatives throughout the municipality, to build a more informed community committed to respecting all people, regardless of gender.

It is worth noting that the IMM offers free workshops, talks, and courses focused on raising awareness of women’s rights, and promoting their empowerment and autonomy. Recently, the talk “Awaken Your Power” was given in the community of Flamboyanes.
