The two controversial deities placed in the ports of Progreso and Telchac Puerto, of Poseidon and Chaac, respectively, resisted the attacks of Hurricane Milton in its close passage through the north of the Yucatan Peninsula.
In the case of Poseidon, in the port of Progreso, its resistance was once again tested, as it previously faced the effects of Hurricane Beryl, when it was also subjected to strong waves resulting from that tropical cyclone.
The statue of the “god of the seas” was announced to have a total weight of 15 tons, and the interior of the sculpture, which is made of fiberglass, has concrete.
To anchor it, they placed 12 piles so it could withstand hurricane winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour.
In the case of Chaac, placed last August at the Telchac Puerto dock, it similarly resisted Milton’s attacks, which were not with great intensity, although it did cause a rise in sea level.
The image of Chaac was carved and modeled in polyethylene with fiberglass and its interior is blacksmith. It weighs 800 kilos and was said to have the strength to withstand a category 5 hurricane.
The above has caused a wave of comments on social networks because many considered that both statues are “warriors” against bad weather.
There was no shortage of users who thanked the deities that Milton had not caused major damage to Yucatecan lands.
As will be remembered, the placement of Poseidon in the sea of Progreso sparked a controversy among the Yucatecans, as many indicated that the presence of the Greek god of the sea angered Chaac, the Mayan god of rain, bringing bad weather such as the hurricane. Beryl.
However, after Beryl’s attacks were not as expected, the image became popular to the point of attracting more tourists to see her. There were even those who brought him offerings.
In Chelem, the image of the megalodon that was on the fishing pier was detached and carried through the water without its fate being known. The dock was destroyed after Milton’s attacks.
The other image of the megalodon located at the Pescadora Pier also succumbed to the onslaught of the cyclone, lying next to the tourist letters on the Progreso beach.
