Playa del Carmen seeks sister city partnership with Tijuana to boost tourism and economic development

With a strategic vision for growth, the government of Playa del Carmen proposed a sister city partnership with Tijuana to boost tourism, investment, and cultural exchange. This initiative was presented before the 2025 Mexico City Tourism Fair.

The proposal was announced by Estefanía Hernández, Secretary of Tourism, and Antón Bojórquez, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, to officials in the Tijuana mayor’s office.

A statement announced that the goal is to create synergies between two key cities for tourism in Mexico.

Among the envisaged benefits are a boost to medical and gastronomic tourism, the exchange of local products between regions, the joint organization of fairs, festivals, and cultural events, and new trade routes between the Mexican Caribbean and Baja California.
