Peon Contreras theater will reopen in November 2025

The “José Peón Contreras” theater would reopen its doors in 2025, probably in November, said Patricia Martín Briceño, head of the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta).

The official reported that the meticulous restoration continues with specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), who have rebuilt the dome “piece by piece as if it were a puzzle.”

Inaugurated in December 1908, the theater, considered the most important cultural venue in the state, caught fire on November 1, 2022, due to a short circuit and has remained closed since then.

Martín Briceño pointed out that, from the first week of her administration, she was invited by the INAH to learn about the restoration work being carried out.

Tentatively, it is in November of this year when the reopening will take place,” said the official.

Currently, she explained, the dome and the frescoes that have been discovered during the work are being restored.

“During this restoration, frescoes have been discovered that were no longer visible due to the layers of paint that were applied to them over the last two decades, and all of that is being recovered.”
