Playa del Carmen’s Local Heart
Ejidal is where Playa del Carmen lives its everyday Mexican life. This residential neighbourhood, located west of the highway that divides the tourist areas from the local ones, is home to families who have lived here for generations. There are no boutique hotels, no beach clubs, and no souvenir shops. What you will find is an authentic Mexican community with markets, street food stands, neighbourhood parks, and prices that reflect local wages rather than tourist budgets.
What Ejidal Is Like
The streets of Ejidal are lined with small houses, local shops, and the kind of family-run businesses that form the backbone of any Mexican town. Panaderías sell fresh bread in the mornings. Fruterías display mountains of tropical fruit. Taquerías serve some of the best — and cheapest — tacos in Playa del Carmen, because their customers are locals who know exactly what good tacos should cost.
Supermarkets like Chedraui and Walmart are nearby along the highway, and the local mercado is a lively place to shop for produce, meat, and household goods. For everyday life, Ejidal is practical and affordable.
Who Ejidal Is For
This is not a neighbourhood for most tourists, and we would not recommend it for a short holiday. The beach is a 30-minute walk or a taxi ride away, and there is little to do here in terms of tourist activities. Accommodation options for visitors are extremely limited.
However, for long-term expats on a tight budget, Ejidal offers the lowest rents in Playa del Carmen. A simple apartment here can cost as little as half of what you would pay in Colosio, and a fraction of Centro prices. If you speak some Spanish and are comfortable in a fully Mexican environment, Ejidal can be a rewarding place to live.
Practical Information
Colectivos run along the main roads connecting Ejidal to the town centre and the beach. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes and costs just a few pesos. Taxis are readily available. Safety is comparable to any residential neighbourhood — use normal common sense, especially after dark.
