Nearly 10,000 Foreigners Live in Mérida, Yucatán

The INEGI 2020 Population Census estimated that 4,452 Americans reside in Yucatán. However, the current estimate is around 10,000.

Addressing the issue of foreigners already residing in neighborhoods such as Ermita, Santiago, and Santa Ana, Marco Tulio Peraza Guzmán, PhD in Architecture, head of the Graduate and Research Unit at the Faculty of Architecture at UADY, stated that the arrival of foreigners to reside in Mérida’s Historic Center is a phenomenon inherent to globalization. This phenomenon has been particularly intense during the first decades of the 21st century.

“In our capital city, the phenomenon triggered a significant upswing in housing renovations in the Historic Center after decades of expulsion of the resident population and the deterioration and abandonment of heritage housing in this historic area.

In that sense, it undoubtedly represented an important factor in raising local awareness about the value of this undervalued, deteriorated, and neglected heritage, which public policies and the real estate sector of the past have underserved.”

Most of the “Expats” (as they call themselves) are generous and always try to help the local community. Foreigners residing in the state are constantly organizing to bring aid to neighborhoods in southern Mérida, as a way of reciprocating the affection and warm welcome they experience here.

La Ermita, Santiago, and Santa Ana in particular are the most sought-after neighborhoods by foreigners, especially because they are the most central and have large properties. This phenomenon is expected to spread to other neighboring “Barrios”.
