National and international tourists enjoy Progreso’s beaches during “Semana Santa”

Thousands of national, Yucatecan, and international tourists enjoyed the beaches of Progreso this Holy Thursday (April 17), especially in the traditional boardwalk area. Six days after the last cruise ship arrived, the “Carnival Valor” also docked at the port at 7:10 a.m., after a stay in Cozumel.

According to official data, the pleasure boat set sail for New Orleans at 3:00 p.m. after a day trip to Progreso and other destinations in Yucatán.

The “Carnival Valor” brought 3,519 passengers and 1,122 crew members, a total of 4,641 visitors, of whom approximately 400 decided to stay and enjoy the pleasant weather on the beaches of Progreso.

During the day, the sun was intense and the temperature reached a high of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), although the heat was mitigated by a cool breeze that entered the port.

Tourists weren’t limited to the beach; they could be seen strolling through the port center, where they purchased various items, such as handicrafts and other souvenirs, and food and drinks from restaurants in and around the boardwalk.

Foreigners weren’t the only ones present in Progreso. From early in the morning, a heavy flow of traffic was noticed on the streets of the center and the areas surrounding the boardwalk due to the arrival of thousands of national and local tourists.

To access the traditional boardwalk, lines of vehicles were long and parking was scarce, but visitors still managed to get to the beach.

However, vehicles continued to arrive in Progreso, although many detoured to the coastal areas of Chelem, Chuburná, and Chicxulub Puerto, ports that also received a significant number of visitors.

Police checkpoints were set up in the Chicxulub area, which, while “not yet activated,” means a noticeable increase in surveillance on days with the highest influx of visitors.

In the coastal communities, numerous vehicles arriving loaded with luggage have been seen for the past few days, heading to areas such as Uaymitún and Chuburná, where seasonal visitors’ homes are located.
