State authorities confirmed the arrest of Damon Royce Martínez, 43, as the alleged perpetrator of the femicide of his mother in Chicxulub Puerto.
Initial investigations show that the suspect, originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, United States, suffocated the woman, stuffed her in a suitcase, and dumped her in a ditch.
This official version would disprove the widespread belief that the woman was dismembered and stuffed into bags, which spread after reports that Damon had stuffed bags into a vehicle.
As we reported, the discovery of the lifeless body of American Linda Louise Jonhston, who had earned the public’s respect and was reported missing on April 12, caused consternation and sadness among the natives and residents of Chicxulub Puerto.
This Thursday, April 24, in a statement, it was reported that members of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), attached to the State Investigative Police (PEI), in coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), arrested Damon Royce Martínez today.
He is considered likely responsible for the incident, which occurred between the afternoon and evening of Wednesday the 16th at the woman’s home, located on 17-B Street and 48th Street in Chicxulub Puerto, Progreso municipality.
According to the complaint and evidence obtained by the investigating police and prosecutors, the suspect was alone in the house with his mother. He repeatedly beat her, placed a rope around her neck, and pressed her until she stopped breathing. The cause of death was asphyxiation by strangulation.
He then stuffed the body into a suitcase and placed it on top of a black bag, which he dragged for several blocks until he reached a construction site.
There was a ditch next to the wall of the building where he hid the body. Authorities found the body on Tuesday, April 22nd.
The suspect was brought before the supervisory judge, who issued an arrest warrant for the crime of aggravated femicide.
The charge of aggravated femicide was filed, and a decision on her legal status was set for April 30th. Pretrial detention was imposed as a precautionary measure—the murder of his own mother, Linda, 71, also a U.S. citizen.
