Starting next Thursday, the “Heart of Mérida” program will extend to 47th Street to connect 60th Street, one of the most important streets for tourism and commerce in the Historic Center, with the new Mérida Tourism and Gastronomic Corridor, as announced by Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada at her weekly press conference.
This entails closing these streets to convert them into 100 percent pedestrian spaces. Vehicle restrictions will be set from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays year-round.
The idea is for local, national, and international visitors to enjoy the wide range of tourist, artisan, commercial, and gastronomic offerings peacefully and safely which is expected to generate significant economic growth.
During her meeting with the media, the mayor revealed that this nighttime project, which will begin next Thursday, April 17, will transform a significant stretch of the Historic Center into a tourist and gastronomic corridor that will extend from 60th Street and 61st Street to 60th Street and 47th Street.
This will encompass key locations such as the Remate Paseo de Montejo, the Santa Ana Market, and Mérida’s new Gastronomic Tourist Corridor.
Throughout these spaces, restaurants will set up outdoor tables, artisans and vendors selling Yucatecan products will be present, and three parking lots will be available for those visiting the area to leave their cars.
During the press conference, Patrón Laviada also announced the schedule of events and entertainment options that the Mérida City Council will offer families during this holiday period.
He indicated that throughout April and May, various exhibitions will be on display in the museums and cultural centers managed by the city council. These exhibitions can be viewed on the website merida.gob.mx, highlighting the Children’s Festival.
The Festival includes the Rally for Security, The Water Cycle in Cuxtal, Recognizing the Music of the Jungle, Children’s Saturdays at José Martí Street, various concerts, and art workshops, film series, sports activities, and more.
