Mérida Penitentiary director Francisco Brito Herrera dies

The director of the Mérida penitentiary, Francisco Brito Herrera, died suddenly of a heart attack in the early hours of Sunday.

Brito Herrera served as the prison’s director for nearly 30 years. During that time, he served under six governors: Víctor Cervera Pacheco, Patricio Patrón Laviada, Ivonne Ortega Pacheco, Rolando Zapata Bello, Mauricio Vila Dosal, and Joaquín Díaz Mena.

He was an official in the Secretariat of Agrarian Reform in Mexico City. He served as Head of the Secondary School Department in the State Government’s Secretariat of Education.

On March 21, 1996, he was appointed director of the Cereso by Governor Víctor Manuel Cervera Pacheco, replacing teacher Miguel Ángel González, following a violent riot that left four dead.

Brito Herrera promoted values ​​such as work, sports, and access to education among inmates, and worked closely with the Prison Ministry as part of a strategy for reintegration and family unity.
