March, the deadliest month so far in 2025, in Yucatán

March turned out to be the deadliest month of the first quarter of the year in Yucatán, accounting for 60% of the homicides recorded during that period over its 31 days, according to information released by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

In its most recent report, the agency indicated that from January to March, there were 45 homicides, most of them unintentional and recorded in preliminary investigations.

According to reports submitted by federal authorities, March stood out tragically with its deadly tally of 28 homicides, only one of which was committed with intent.

With this data, the third month of 2025 accounted for 62% of the deaths. In February, seven deaths were reported, and in January, 10 were recorded.

Based on the two categories indicated by the agency, 89% of homicides were committed unintentionally during the first quarter of the year, which corresponds to 40%.

In the case of homicides committed with intent, there are “only” five cases, of which two were committed with a knife and three with another object, two occurring in January, two in February, and one in March.

In the case of tragic events in which death was caused by negligence or recklessness rather than by direct intent, the figure recorded last month—27 deaths—is four times higher than that of January, when eight cases were recorded, and five times higher than the figure documented in February, a period in which there were five such deaths.

One striking aspect is that the total number of unintentional homicides during the cited period corresponds to traffic accidents. According to federal data, there was one accidental homicide every 27.5 hours last April; that is, on average, one person lost their life to this cause every day.

Of the unintentional incidents, the 2025 figure is higher than the figure recorded in Yucatán last year from January to March, a period in which there were 29 such deaths.

These deaths were organized as follows: March recorded 12, the rest occurred in February, with 11 cases, and January, with six. Additionally, there were 11 intentional deaths.

In 2023, after the first three months of the year, there were 41 cases of unintentional homicides, one more than the number recorded this year. Also in that first quarter, there were six intentional deaths.

In addition to these violent deaths, there were two femicides in March, according to federal authorities in their monthly report.
