Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is what Playa del Carmen was twenty years ago — a quiet fishing village on the Caribbean coast where life moves slowly and tourism has not yet overwhelmed the local character. Sitting halfway between Cancun airport and Playa del Carmen, it is one of the most accessible yet least commercialised towns on the Riviera Maya.

The town centre is small enough to walk in ten minutes. A handful of restaurants, shops, and bars surround a central plaza that faces the beach. The iconic leaning lighthouse — tilted by Hurricane Beulah in 1967 and never straightened — is the town’s most recognisable landmark. Fishing boats line the shore, and the atmosphere is genuinely laid-back in a way that bigger resort towns can only imitate.

What sets Puerto Morelos apart is its reef. The town sits directly in front of a section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that has been designated a national marine park. The snorkelling here is exceptional — the reef is close to shore, well-protected, and teeming with marine life. Guided snorkelling tours depart from the beach daily and are among the best-value reef experiences on the entire coast.

The town also has a thriving local market (the Ruta de los Cenotes road heads inland to a string of excellent cenotes), a botanical garden, and a crocodile sanctuary. For visitors who want to experience the Caribbean coast without the crowds, noise, and tourist infrastructure of Cancun or even Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos is the answer.

It is a 20-minute drive from Cancun airport and 25 minutes north of Playa del Carmen — close to everything, but a world away in pace and character.
