Cozumel

Cozumel is Mexico’s largest Caribbean island, sitting just 19 kilometres off the coast of Playa del Carmen. The 45-minute ferry ride from Playa’s town centre delivers you to an island that has been famous among divers since Jacques Cousteau put it on the map in the 1960s. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest reef system on earth — runs along Cozumel’s western shore, creating some of the most spectacular diving and snorkelling in the Caribbean.

The island’s main town, San Miguel, is a compact, walkable port with restaurants, shops, and a waterfront promenade. Cruise ships dock here regularly, bringing waves of day visitors, but beyond the port area the island is surprisingly quiet and undeveloped. The eastern coast faces the open Caribbean with dramatic rocky shorelines, powerful surf, and a handful of beachside bars. The interior is covered in low jungle with scattered Mayan ruins.

Renting a scooter or convertible to circle the island is one of the classic Cozumel experiences. The coastal road takes you past wild beaches, secluded coves, and clifftop viewpoints where you can watch the waves crash against ancient coral limestone. On the western side, beach clubs and snorkelling spots line the calmer waters.

For divers, Cozumel is world-class. The drift dives along the Palancar and Santa Rosa walls, where currents carry you past towering coral formations, sea turtles, eagle rays, and nurse sharks, are experiences that rank among the best in the world. Non-divers can snorkel the same reefs from boat tours that depart daily from the marina.

From Playa del Carmen, Cozumel makes a perfect day trip or an overnight stay for those who want to dive multiple days.
