Junk Food-Free Schools in Yucatán, Including UADY

Next Monday, March 31st, the provisions for junk food-free schools across the country will go into effect. In Yucatán, the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY) campuses are also included.

On September 30th, the Secretariats of Public Education (SEP) and Health published the “General Guidelines for the Preparation, Distribution, and Sale of Prepared, Processed, and Bulk Foods and Beverages, as well as the Promotion of Healthy Eating Lifestyles, in All Schools of the National Education System (SEN).”

According to the publication, these guidelines will go into effect 180 days later and will be mandatory starting March 29, 2025, in all public elementary, secondary, and higher education schools.

The new guidelines include prohibiting the sale of ultra-processed and low-nutritional-value foods in schools, as well as promoting the consumption of natural water in schools. The consumption of seasonal fruits and vegetables is also encouraged.

To replace junk food, school cafeterias will be allowed to sell “unprocessed, regional, or local foods and non-alcoholic beverages.”
