Among the natural treasures of the Yucatan coast, Isla Columpios has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most enchanting destinations for those seeking a unique experience. Located in Chuburá Puerto, this island is not a conventional tourist resort, but rather a little paradise of calm waters, surrounded by nature and, as its name suggests, dotted with swings that seem to float on the sea.
Isla Columpios is approximately 55 kilometers from Mérida, a trip of almost an hour by car. From Mérida, take the highway to Progreso and from there to Chuburná. Once in the town, go to the harbor and book a boat tour that takes you directly to the island. Kayaks are also available for rent.
Boat transportation costs around 250 pesos per person, depending on the number of passengers and the length of the tour.

Main Attractions
Among the attractions are the water swings: They are the absolute center of attention. They are ideal for taking stunning photographs, enjoying the sea breeze, and relaxing with the gentle lapping of the sea.
Flamingo watching is another reason to visit the island. During the boat tour, you can see pink flamingos in their natural habitat, as well as other types of birds.
Its mangroves and natural tunnels are also beautiful. Some tours include walks through the mangroves where magical green tunnels form.
Isla Columpios also has secluded beaches, and little sandy areas where you can swim, picnic, or simply relax.

Local Cuisine
Before or after visiting the island, tourists can enjoy Celestún’s delicious cuisine. Some must-try dishes include the Tikin Xic fish, marinated in achiote and cooked over charcoal.
Another delicacy is the freshly prepared shrimp or snail ceviche. Seafood cocktails are another refreshing option to beat the heat.
Prices at local restaurants are usually quite affordable, with main dishes between 120 and 250 pesos.
The best time to visit
High traffic: November through April, mainly during winter holidays, Holy Week, and weekends.
Low season: May to October, although July and August can experience peak visitor numbers due to summer vacations. Visiting between January and March is ideal for seeing flamingos and enjoying the cooler weather.
When visiting Isla Columpios, it’s advisable to bring cash, as many spots don’t accept cards. It’s also advisable to use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the ecosystems. And the most important recommendation: respect the local flora and fauna: don’t leave trash or disturb the animals.
