Highly dangerous Guatemalan wanted criminal arrested in Merida

The General Subdirectorate of Criminal Investigation of the National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala reports that thanks to the collaboration of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), Rudy Augusto Ortiz Morales, alias “El Smoking”, was captured in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, on February 4, 2025.

This wanted criminal, who is one of the leaders of a gang clique, had an international arrest warrant and a red notice for several crimes, including murder and illicit association.

Rudy Ortiz, who had been a fugitive since his escape from the Guatemalan Fraijanes 2 prison in May 2023, was deported back to Guatemala after being arrested in Mexican territory.

In his escape, he had impersonated another inmate, Héctor Alfonso Quinteros Martínez, who was found dead in his cell in a case that revealed the gang leader’s escape.

Ortiz Morales, linked to multiple attacks against public transport in that nation’s capital, arrived this Friday at La Aurora International Airport, where Guatemalan authorities received his extradition.

He was committing crimes in Chiapas and Tabasco until he believed that in Yucatan he could continue living with impunity. Still, he was captured when he tried to rob a car here in the city of Merida.
