On the penultimate day of the Easter holidays, two female police officers became heroes by preventing a double family tragedy: they rescued a minor and his father who were being swept away by the waves in El Cuyo, a port in Tizimín, a municipality in eastern Yucatán, Mexico.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025. According to reports, several police officers, while on patrol at the El Cuyo pier, noticed a man and a child being swept away by the strong waves.
Both were in distress approximately 25 meters from the shore, next to the pier.
Immediately, officers Rosa María Ucán Mendoza and Deysi Patricia Can Kantún jumped into the sea to help them.
The female police officers swam approximately 20 meters and helped the swimmers return to the shore. With the support of other swimmers, the officers managed to rescue them.
Once on land, the rescued men identified themselves as José Fernando Caamal Chi, 44, and Yael Filiberto Caamal, 12, father and son, respectively.
The father reported that they had arrived in El Cuyo for a visit from Chichimilá, also a municipality in eastern Yucatán. Fernando said his son was fishing at the pier, but his bucket fell into the sea and the boy jumped in to retrieve it, not taking into account the deep water.
Seeing his son drowning, the father jumped into the sea to rescue him, but the strong waves began to pull him in as well.
Paramedic Pedro Gabriel Melgar Cupul treated the father and son. He later reported that neither required emergency transportation to a hospital.
