Progress continues on the restoration of the Peón Contreras Theater, to recover its architectural grandeur and return it to the service of Yucatecan society.
The rehabilitation work on this cultural venue is underway thanks to the collaboration between the Mayan Renaissance Government and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), after being closed since the fire that occurred in November 2022.
The state government announced the completion of an in-depth study and a comprehensive rescue project, as well as the management of additional resources from the Federal Government.
The continuity of the project includes a specialized structural intervention to evaluate and address damage beyond the visible ones.
The restoration architect Luciano Cedillo Álvarez, former director of the INAH, explained that the damage covers areas such as the lobby, the stage entrance, and the dome, so the restoration could take up to two years, due to structural problems such as humidity, damaged columns, and affected beams.
Initially, 25 million pesos were allocated for the restoration of the façade, although more resources will be required to ensure a complete restoration.
