Esoteric products: New Year’s Rituals and traditions that illuminate Mérida

Money, work, and love are the most fervent desires of consumers of esoteric products who go to the Lucas de Gálvez market in the heart of Mérida.

With the end of the year around the corner, the demand for these items increases considerably; and the tradition of rituals to attract good luck continues to gain followers.

Jaqueline Arce, a salesperson at a specialized store in the market, pointed out that sales of esoteric products increase up to 50% on these dates.

“People come looking for amulets, colored candles, and bottles of abundance. It is a very special time for those who believe in the energy that accompanies the beginning of a new year,” he explained.

Among the most requested items, he said, are candles and incense. In addition, bottles of abundance have become the star gift of the season, according to Esmeralda Calderón, another market tenant.

“These bottles are very symbolic, people buy them to share prosperity with their loved ones.”

Not only do the products attract attention, but also the customs that accompany this time.

From sweeping the sidewalk to ward off bad vibes to running with suitcases to attract trips, the rituals are as varied as their followers. Grapes at midnight, lentils are thrown into the air and the wearing of colored underwear are also part of this mosaic of traditions full of hope and humor.
