Elevated Viaduct Delays Cause Traffic Chaos and Accidents

The construction of the elevated viaduct to the Progreso Deep-Sea Port not only shows structural defects, which have led to delays in the delivery of the project, but is also causing disruption to traffic and frequent accidents in the area, said Alelhi Ruiz Escalante, a resident representative of the municipality of Progreso.

The former councilor of the Progreso City Council said that since the start of construction of the elevated viaduct in June 2023, the companies in charge have generated structural defects, such as the collapse of one of the beams, which crushed two employees, while another died after falling from a height of approximately 20 meters.

Regarding the risk of accidents, he commented that his family has been on the verge of becoming part of the statistics. “My parents and I were involved in a traffic accident due to the lack of road control on the two-way streets, and we were going to be hit hard. As of today, there are no logistics to prevent accidents. The construction has taken so long that it’s causing traffic jams and accidents, and it’s affecting us,” Ruiz Escalante stated.

He also explained that the most affected are the residents of the Canul Reyes neighborhood, the residential area closest to the center of the municipality.

“There are no logistics to prevent accidents. This project has already taken too long, and it’s affecting the population, the residents of the Canul Reyes neighborhood. We’re located on 37th Street between 92nd and 94th Streets. A wave of robberies has erupted in the area. We call on the authorities to take action in response to this situation,” said the interviewee.

In this context, it should be noted that the construction of the elevated viaduct to the Progreso Deep-Sea Port began in March 2023. It was budgeted at 1.5 billion pesos, is 2.7 kilometers long, and is intended for cargo transportation. It was originally planned to be completed in June 2024, with an expected inauguration in July, on the municipality’s anniversary. This project will also not be completed in 2025, as the project has been delayed for almost a year. The project is being led by a state-owned concessionaire with national capital, and the construction company is the ICA Group.
