Mérida, the capital of one of the safest states in Mexico, is an attractive place for criminal leaders to seek refuge to continue operating and go unnoticed.
Well, just last week after reporting the arrest of Jorge Luis Toledo Cruz, one of the leaders of the Caborca Cartel that operates in Quintana Roo, the Yucatán Public Security Secretariat announced the arrest of Bruno Matías, AKA “El Choky.” , now alleged boss of a criminal group that operates in Tabasco along with other men who accompanied him.
On December 25, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) Yucatán reported in a statement that the man from Tabasco was linked to the process along with his companions.
These are 5 men accused of the crimes of carrying weapons and prohibited instruments, drug dealing in the variant of possession for supply purposes, attacks on a public servant, and damage to other people’s property, who were linked to the process after evaluating the data and elements provided by the Prosecutor’s Office, for the events that occurred last week in the Mérida Anillo Periférico.
Local media in Tabasco indicate that Bruno Matías is from Playas del Rosario, Tabasco, and went to live in Teapa, in the same state, where he allegedly spread terror with criminal businesses.
They identify him as the right-hand man of the former leader of “La Barredora” cartel, Carlos Tomás alias “El 12”, “El Lic” or “El Tomasin”, who was also said to have taken refuge in Yucatán last February.
In this regard, the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tabasco (SSyPC) reported that “El Choky” was the main generator of violence in Teapa, the Tabasco hills, and other municipalities of that state, and they point to him as a kidnapper of migrants.
In fact, “Choky” had already been arrested on July 24, 2024, in Tabasco, along with a woman and a minor who was barely 13 years old.
However, the circumstances of his release are unknown, since on that date it was also reported that weapons and drugs were found on the criminal leader detained in Mérida, now linked to a trial in Mérida, Yucatán.
In this context, in Yucatán, as the hearing continued, the First Control Judge of the First District decreed the order of connection to proceedings for the crimes charged.
In the case of Bruno, he was accused of carrying prohibited weapons and instruments, drug dealing, dangerous attacks against a public servant and damage to other people’s property.
In addition to the order of connection to the process, the Control Judge granted a period of two months for the closure of the complementary investigation, time that the parties will have at their disposal to continue the investigation. The accused were surprised by police officers at kilometer 11 of the Mérida Periférico and after being approached by the uniformed officers, they were discovered in possession of cannabis, methamphetamines and replicas of firearms, for which they were detained and taken to court.
