The State Government, through the University of the Arts of Yucatán (UNAY), announces its celebration of International Dance Day with an open day that includes reflective activities, body practices, performances, an art market, and the premiere of a Spanish dance and music performance featuring choreography by the Escuela Bolera, which combines elements of classical dance and folklore and is characterized by its baroque style and complexity.
The Rector of UNAY, Architect Domingo Rodríguez Semerena, highlighted the importance of this celebration and the opportunity it offers for the community to come together and celebrate dance in all its forms. ¨On April 29th, we will open the doors of the beautiful building (the Old Train Station) to celebrate dance through lectures, lectures, workshops, film screenings, choreographic performances, and dance premieres¨, he emphasized.
She explained that the day will close with a Spanish dance and music performance—”From Bizet to Albéniz”—with choreography by Escuela Bolera, directed by Professor Sandra Tinal and performed by students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Classical Dance Teaching program. Live music will be provided by the UNAY Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Manuel Rubio, and premiered specifically for this commemoration.
Provided by Professor Diana Bayardo, UNAY’s dance director, the activities will span the entire day and include lectures and sessions on dance pedagogy, traditional Spanish and folkloric repertoire, traditional hula, Kalarippayat, popular and Afro-Cuban dances, among others, as well as a screening of the film “The Haumana” with a discussion with Professor Carlos Castro.
She highlighted the premieres of EXSPECTA, a contemporary dance choreography by the UNAY Dance Group, the art market for students of the Bachelor’s in Theater program, the screening, and the Spanish dance and music performance – From Bizet to Albéniz, the only activity with a recovery fee of 50 pesos.
This is, she added, a production directed by Professor Sandra Tinal, comprised of choreographies that propose a contemporary perspective based on Escuela Bolera, a style that is part of Spanish Dance.
The production is the result of a collaboration between the UNAY Dance and Music departments, in which the dancers reinterpret their approach to classical music of Spanish nationalism and Bizet’s opera Carmen.
In this regard, she invited those interested in enjoying the activities to consult the full program at www.unay.edu.mx and on the institution’s social media channels.
