YOBAÍN, YUCATAN — The Municipal Police and the legal department of the Yobaín City Council shut down a construction project on Friday, May 2nd, for lacking municipal permits and for closing all beach access on the Yobaín-Chabihau highway.
Yobaín authorities went to the aforementioned coastal stretch after several complaints alleging that the Canadian owners of the condominiums under construction, had illegally blocked the beach access.
Furthermore, when they were asked for the corresponding documentation and permits, they presented documents allegedly issued by the mayor of Sinanché Abril, Abigail Palma Bacelis, who, according to the Canadian citizens, received one million dollars for the permits, even though this is not her jurisdiction.
At the time of writing, INSEJUPY (Institute of Legal Security of Patrimonial Property of Yucatan) indicated that the construction site is located on Yobaín territory.
The workers tried to resist the authorities, but the project was eventually shut down.
