Campeche reports 21 new cases of chickenpox in one week

“During the last week, infections increased from 132 to 153 among children, confirmed the Federal Ministry of Health (SSA).

“More than 20 new cases of chickenpox were registered in Campeche during the last week of 2025, increasing from 132 to 153 infections among children, according to the Federal Ministry of Health (SSA), which confirmed an increase of 39 cases, equivalent to 34.21 percent, compared to the same period last year.

According to the report from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave) of the federal agency, infections in girls exceeded those in boys in epidemiological week 11, with 11 and 10, respectively, adding up to 21 new cases found across the state.

However, so far this year, 89 men have contracted the disease, 25 more than in the previous year. In the case of women, there have been 64. Throughout the peninsula, Campeche ranks third in positive cases detected, while Yucatán has 219 and Quintana Roo 254, making it the state with the highest number of infections among children in the region.

The State Secretary of Health (SSA), Josefa Castillo Avendaño, stated that every year in the spring season, it is normal for the incidence of chickenpox cases in children to increase. She believes that 2025 will be no exception, nor will the figures be different from previous years.

She also acknowledged that when children begin to show symptoms such as fever or cough, or some type of rash, parents immediately stop sending their children to school. Finally, Castillo Avendaño emphasized that this disease is typical of the season, but it is necessary to educate parents not to take their children to school when they show these symptoms and to take them to receive medical attention so that their classmates do not become infected and chickenpox continues to spread.

“We need to do this work together to prevent the infections that occur, not precisely because of the heat, but because of the spring season,” concluded the head of the State Health Secretariat.
