Councilwoman Gabriela González Ojeda, president of the Mérida City Council’s Health and Ecology Commission and representative of the Movimiento Ciudadano party, spoke in favor of promoting the transition from traditional horse-drawn carriages to electric models, in response to requests from animal rights groups and independent parades.
During an interview, González Ojeda noted that the City Council currently has four electric carriages, although she acknowledged that their use has been limited due to tourists’ preference for horse-drawn carriages.
“We know very well that, in our conditions, in our city, the heat is inhumane for a horse pulling a horse-drawn carriage with people on it,” she noted.
The councilwoman emphasized that a proposal must be developed that includes raising awareness among tourists and citizens about the need to protect animal welfare, particularly during periods of high temperatures.
“In that sense, we will present a formal proposal that will benefit both carriage drivers and animal protection groups,” she indicated.
Regarding experiences in other states, the councilor mentioned the case of Guadalajara, governed by Movimiento Ciudadano since 2015, where the complete transition to electric carriages was achieved. She considered that one of the success factors was positioning electric carriages as a novel and attractive alternative for tourism.
