An ocelot that caused alarm among residents of the X’Bec police station in the municipality of Buctzotz was captured this Wednesday after returning to a chicken coop where it had already devoured a duck.
The feline, an adult male, had been attacking poultry such as ducks, chickens, and turkeys.
It was first seen on Tuesday, when it entered a house adjacent to the forest, owned by Mr. Armín López, and was caught devouring a duck before fleeing back into the forest.
The ocelot was captured by residents of X’Bec, Buctzotz, after returning to the chicken coop where it devoured a duck. Profepa authorities arrived at the scene.
This Wednesday, April 9, the ocelot returned to the same location, allowing residents to organize and implement a plan to catch it. After successfully enclosing the animal in a cage, the municipal authorities of Buctzotz were notified, and they notified the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
Upon arriving at the scene, Profepa personnel sedated the animal with a tranquilizer dart, following safety protocols, and minutes later, it was removed from the coop.
The ocelot was transferred to the Environmental Management Unit (UMA) in Valladolid, where it will undergo veterinary examinations before being relocated to an environment suitable for its species. According to the information collected, the feline may have left the forest in search of food.
It is presumed that the scarcity of wildlife, caused by the current drought, forced it to approach homes.
It should be noted that the ocelot is a species protected by federal law due to its endangered status.
