On Saturday, April 12, various groups opposed to animal abuse demonstrated at the Flag Monument.
Members of the groups Rescates Independientes, Un Millón de Esperanzas, Sanando Corazones Perrunos, and Red Animal Yucatán gathered on the steps of the Flag Monument on Paseo de Montejo to demand that authorities respect the rights and well-being of animals in Yucatán.
The activists point out that to date there are nearly 700 reports of animal abuse, urging authorities to act to safeguard their well-being.
During the protest, they also rejected the continued use of horse-drawn carriages, bullfights, and lassoing tournaments, which have been eliminated in other states but are still held in Yucatán. The animal rights activist confirmed that there has been dialogue with the horse-drawn carriage drivers’ union, despite the heated encounters.
According to the protesters, they have already approached Mérida City Council authorities to address this issue, particularly regarding the suspension of horse-drawn carriages. They also complain about the lack of communication with the state government regarding animal abuse.
