Cancun

Cancun needs little introduction. Mexico’s most famous beach resort city sits on a narrow barrier island 55 kilometres north of Playa del Carmen, and it draws millions of visitors every year to its Hotel Zone — a 25-kilometre strip of mega-resorts, shopping malls, and nightclubs fronting some of the most dramatic Caribbean beach you will find anywhere.

The Hotel Zone is purpose-built for tourism. Enormous all-inclusive resorts line both sides of the strip, with the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Nichupte Lagoon to the west. The beaches are wide, the water is impossibly blue, and the infrastructure is polished to international resort standards. Nightlife is equally large-scale — Coco Bongo, The City, and Mandala are spectacle-driven mega-clubs that draw thousands nightly.

What many visitors miss is Downtown Cancun — the real city across the lagoon where over 800,000 people live. The downtown has excellent local restaurants, authentic markets, and a vibrant street food scene at a fraction of Hotel Zone prices. Parque de las Palapas is the heart of local Cancun, with food stalls, live music, and families gathering every evening.

Cancun is also the gateway to the wider Riviera Maya. The international airport (CUN) is where virtually all visitors arrive, and from there the entire coast — Playa del Carmen, Tulum, the cenotes, Cozumel — is accessible. Isla Mujeres is a short ferry ride from Cancun’s Puerto Juarez terminal, and day trips to Chichen Itza depart daily.

Whether you love it or find it too polished, Cancun is an undeniable force on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and a neighbour that shapes everything about the Riviera Maya.
