An alarming incident occurred on the seawall of the port of Río Lagartos, when a crocodile attacked a fisherman while he was washing his boat.
Libardo Loría Cordero, known as “Chuno,” was surprised by the reptile and could not flee the scene. The fisherman’s screams of pain and despair alerted some young men who were nearby, who quickly came to his aid.
The young men hit the crocodile with a piece of wood until it released the fisherman. The injured man was later taken to a clinic in Tizimín for immediate care.
Libardo required 25 stitches in his arm to close the wounds caused by the lizard. Fortunately, the fisherman is stable and is receiving the necessary care for his recovery.
The incident has raised concerns among residents and visitors of Río Lagartos, as news has begun circulating on social media. A video from a surveillance camera shows the man struggling with the animal in the sea, and shortly afterward, the man is seen walking along the sidewalk of the boardwalk with his arm injured.

Following the attack on a fisherman this morning on the Río Lagartos boardwalk, rumors have surfaced that there are two crocodiles living there at the Chiquilá beach resort in this municipality.
This situation concerned those who heard the comments because the area is frequently visited by tourists and swimmers, who would be exposed to an attack like the one that occurred today.
Some people pointed out that it is the reptiles’ natural habitat and that tourists should be prohibited from entering to swim; others believe that the best course of action is to relocate the crocodiles.
