A blackout in Mérida left several neighborhoods in the center and north of the Yucatecan capital without power, causing discontent among residents and businesses, who expressed anger on social media.
The power outage occurred on the afternoon of Monday, May 5, around 6 p.m., affecting areas such as Altabrisa and the city center. The sudden interruption impacted both homes and businesses, according to citizen reports on various digital platforms.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) explained that the blackout in Mérida was due to different causes in the affected areas.
In the Altabrisa neighborhood, unknown individuals stole copper wiring, disrupting the power supply. This act of vandalism generated one of the longest outages of the day. Meanwhile, in the south-central part of Mérida, service was interrupted after a truck collided with a power line, damaging the infrastructure.
According to a statement from the CFE, service has already been restored in the affected neighborhoods. The company stated that “at the moment there are no neighborhoods without power,” and that specific cases such as a transformer failure are being addressed.
So far, no arrests have been reported for the theft of the wiring, nor have further details been provided about the vehicle accident that damaged the grid.
