Miami-Mérida Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Cuba

Viva Aerobus flight VB755, operating on the Miami-Mérida route, was diverted to José Martí International Airport in Havana, Cuba, due to an engine failure on Tuesday, May 6th. The incident raised concerns among passengers on board.

According to media outlets such as Reforma and El Mañana, the aircraft, an Airbus A321neo registered XA-VXR, experienced the failure while flying over the Caribbean. The crew decided to make an emergency landing in Havana, as it was the closest and safest airport.

Passengers expressed their displeasure on social media over the lack of information and assistance after the landing. Ricardo Pérez Solís, from Yucatán, who was also on the flight, commented on X (formerly Twitter) that they were not provided with information and had to endure heat, hunger, and fear during the wait. Viva Aerobus responded to the complaints on social media, indicating that a replacement plane was already en route to Havana to continue the journey to Mérida. The airline also mentioned that onboard amenities would be provided during the return flight.

Another passenger, Emanuel Vilchis, said that the emergency landing was made with only one engine and that the situation was so critical that he even said goodbye to his family before landing.

To date, Viva Aerobus has not issued an official statement detailing the exact causes of the failure or the measures taken following the incident. Civil aviation authorities and the airline are expected to investigate to clarify what happened and ensure safety on future flights.
