UNAY Creates Its First Punk Rock Ensemble

Thanks to the emergence of the Department of Artistic Groups at the University of the Arts of Yucatán (UNAY), this institution created its first Punk Rock Ensemble, a project led by Juan Uicab Cruz, a graduate in Musical Arts.

Regarding this project, the bassist for the double bassist for the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra (OSY), commented that it was born out of the interest and trust that the department coordinator, Alejandro Basulto, has in Uicab Cruz, who is an active member of the local punk scene.

He added that the ensemble is made up of Martín Garrett Selby on vocals; Erick Santiago Arguello Martínez on guitar; David Saucedo Álvarez on bass; Jesús René Cervantes Gamboa on drums, all students of the UNAY Bachelor’s and Technical Programs in Musical Arts, while he is in charge of conducting.

He explained that, as part of this project, the band will perform a concert next Monday, May 7, at the Ephemeral Cultural Center, located on Avenida Colón and 6th Street, No. 508, in the García Ginerés neighborhood. They will share the stage with the Contemporary Music Ensemble, a group that emerged in the same department.

Uicab Cruz noted that this initiative began during the current semester, and therefore, rehearsals for next week’s concert have also begun. They will play a repertoire of songs from bands such as the New York Dolls, Los Saicos, the Sex Pistols, and other great exponents of punk from the 80s and 90s.

The founder of the punk label and distro Callejero Records also noted that punk acts socially as an ideology and/or lifestyle for some people, as it contains purposeful characteristics in both its lyrics and music, which fosters musical, creative, and intellectual openness both inside and outside of academia. For those interested in attending the Punk Rock Ensemble concert, the concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the aforementioned day and location. Admission will cost 50 pesos. The recital is open to all ages, which is why the director invited everyone to join in the night of punk rock.
