Following the Va y Ven tragedy, Mérida’s International Avenue is blocked by protesters

Following the death of a woman struck by a Va y Ven bus and other traffic accidents in the area, residents of the Álvaro Torre Díaz neighborhood blocked Mérida’s International Avenue.

The residents’ protest occurred on Friday, May 3rd, and caused traffic chaos, as the avenue serves as a gateway to and from the city.

After 5 p.m., the protesters took over the north-south lanes, which lead to the city’s ring road and to Umán, in protest to demand that the Ie-tram route be opened to all vehicles.

They expressed their concern about the lack of pedestrian crossings and signage and explained that they are seeking to have the authorities address their requests, as they do not want a tragedy like a woman’s to happen again. They recalled that they held a demonstration with their demands in October of last year, but so far the authorities have not responded to them.

Members of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene and began an operation to redirect traffic. That night, the situation nearly turned violent when a motorcyclist insisted on passing through the area, leading to a verbal and almost physical confrontation.
