Volunteers have collected 84 tons of waste on the Yucatan coast

In just over five years since its creation, the civil association Limpiemos Yucatán has collected 84 tons of trash on the Yucatan coast.

With more than 14,000 volunteers, this organization seeks to make a difference and raise awareness about respecting the state’s ecosystems.

This was revealed by Fernando Méndez Alfaro, president of the organization, who also explained that they have been responsible for cleaning and sanitizing beaches and mangroves in the state, attracting an increasing number of people concerned about environmental preservation. He added that they have received support from both state and municipal governments for this purpose.

He noted that they have been able to involve schools and communities in this volunteer work, who have volunteered their time to keep the beaches and coastal dunes clean.

He explained that Limpiemos Yucatán plans 24 cleanups of these spaces every year or twice a month. He even stated that this figure is often exceeded due to persistent need.

He explained that they have already contacted the new head of the state’s Secretariat of Sustainable Development, Neyra Silva Rosado, to find common ground for supporting local ecosystems.

He announced that, together with Costco, they will carry out a cleanup activity in Telchac Puerto on the 24th of this month. He invited those who wished to participate to contact them through the civil association’s social media channels.

He also noted that, with the support of federal authorities, in this case, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, they will be conducting a cleanup on June 5th in Progreso. He noted that this activity will be part of a coordinated, national effort, which Yucatán will also join.

Méndez Alfaro reported that, although there is still a need to raise awareness about ecosystem preservation, more people are already joining in the care of ecosystems through the creation of other similar organizations.

He estimated that progress on the Yucatecan coast regarding environmental preservation is 40 percent. He considered Río Lagartos and San Crisanto, among others, to be benchmarks in environmental preservation.
