Foreigner reported missing in Progreso, Yucatán; she could have been assaulted before disappearing

Acquaintances of a missing foreigner residing in Chicxulub Puerto asked for help on social media to find the elderly woman.

The woman is Linda Louise Johnston, 71. The State Attorney General’s Office issued an alert to try to find her.

The alert states that the last time anyone heard from the foreigner was on April 12, but her acquaintances say on social media that she disappeared on April 14 and there is no trace of her.

According to testimonies from acquaintances of the woman, the last time they heard from her was last Wednesday, when she sent a series of messages via WhatsApp that worried everyone.

In them, she showed photographs of her face with bruises and injuries to her neck.

According to reports, the woman was at her home on 17-B Street between 46th and 48th Streets in Chicxulub Puerto, accompanied by her son, Damon Martínez, who had come from the United States to visit her.

The man was in prison, convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend with a baseball bat to the head, and is also known to have a history of violence against his mother, Linda.

After the messages she sent to her best friend, she hasn’t been heard from again. At the same time, Damon claims that since the day she disappeared, his mother got drunk and left the house without saying anything, a story the complainants believe is unbelievable.

In response, foreign residents of the port organized a search party and asked the local community to use drones if possible to try to find her, but so far, it has been unsuccessful.

Linda is highly regarded in Chicxulub, not only by other foreign residents but also by the locals.

She is known for her volunteer work as part of the food bank team. Furthermore, several people who have worked with her during her years in Chicxulub have positive comments about her.

Questioning a driver

In an unexpected twist in the case, a ride-hailing driver revealed that she was stopped by police while on duty, and her vehicle was linked to the investigation. Ana explained that on the day of her disappearance, she had transported the son of Linda, the missing woman, who is now the prime suspect in the case and is being held while the necessary evidence is gathered against him.

The driver stated that on Sunday afternoon, April 20, she was stopped by Municipal Police officers, who asked her to pull over so they could inform her that her vehicle would be part of the investigation.

Ana stated that she fully cooperated with the authorities, to whom she provided all the details of the trip she took with the suspect, whom she considered “just another passenger.”

One of the aspects that most caught the investigators’ attention was that, during the trip, the suspect was carrying three large bags of garbage, the contents of which the driver did not know.

According to her testimony, the bags seemed heavy, and although she tried to help him load them into the vehicle, he flatly refused.

She stated that, at the time of her detention, the alleged perpetrator was in one of the patrol cars, and despite having access to his cell phone, the authorities were unable to unlock it, not even using the facial recognition system.

After nearly five hours of interviews with authorities, Ana was approached by a woman not wearing a police uniform, but rather clothing that appeared to be formal attire. She suggested that her statements were inconsistent with the investigation, suggesting that she might be implicated as an accomplice.

This comment raised alarm bells for the driver, who expressed feeling vulnerable and concerned for her legal safety.

Ana decided to share her experience to avoid being unfairly linked to an incident in which, she claims, she acted only as a transportation service provider.
