There is no airport in Playa, so you need to travel approximately 55 kilometres south along the Riviera Maya highway to reach town. Option 1: ADO Bus — The Budget Choice
The ADO bus is the cheapest way to get from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen. ADO is Mexico’s main intercity bus company, and their airport service is reliable, air-conditioned, and comfortable.
How it works: Follow signs to the ADO counter in the arrivals hall. Buy a ticket (around 250-300 pesos one way) and wait for the next bus. Buses depart roughly every 30 to 60 minutes during the day, with reduced frequency late at night. The bus drops you at Playa del Carmen’s ADO terminal on 5th Avenue, right in the centre of town.
Journey time: Approximately 60 to 75 minutes, as the bus may make one or two stops along the way.
Pros: Cheapest option. No haggling required. Air-conditioned and comfortable. Drops you in the centre of town.
Cons: You wait for the next scheduled departure rather than leaving immediately. No door-to-door service — you need to get from the bus terminal to your hotel on foot or by taxi. Large luggage can be awkward on the bus. Late-night service is limited.
Best for: Solo travellers, backpackers, budget-conscious visitors, and anyone comfortable navigating public transport in a new country.
Option 2: Private Airport Transfer — The Comfortable Choice
A private transfer is a pre-booked car service where a driver meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign and takes you directly to your hotel.
How it works: Book online before your trip. When you land, your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall. You walk to the car, load your bags, and drive directly to your accommodation. No stops, no waiting, no navigation required.
Journey time: Approximately 45 to 55 minutes direct.
Cost: Typically 800 to 1500 pesos one way, depending on the vehicle type and the company. Some hotels offer their own transfer service.
Pros: Door-to-door service. No waiting. Comfortable and private. Driver handles everything. Ideal for late-night arrivals. Easy with children and luggage.

Option 3: Shared Shuttle — The Middle Ground
Shared shuttles offer a compromise between the bus and a private transfer. A van picks up several passengers heading to the same area and drops each one at their hotel.
How it works: Book in advance or find shuttle desks in the arrivals hall. You wait until the van has enough passengers, then depart. The van makes multiple stops along the route, dropping passengers at their respective hotels.
Journey time: 60 to 90 minutes, depending on how many stops the van makes.

Important taxi warning: Do not accept rides from unofficial drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Use only the official taxi stand. Unofficial drivers are unregulated, uninsured, and occasionally unsafe.
Option 5: Rental Car — The Independent Choice
If you plan to explore the Riviera Maya independently — visiting cenotes, ruins, and smaller towns at your own pace — renting a car from the airport makes sense.
How it works: Multiple car rental agencies have desks in the arrivals hall and lots adjacent to the airport. Book in advance for better rates. You drive yourself south on Highway 307, a straightforward divided highway, directly to Playa del Carmen.
Journey time: 45 to 55 minutes.
Cost: Car rental starts from around 500 to 1000 pesos per day depending on the vehicle and company, plus fuel and insurance.
Pros: Complete independence. Useful for exploring the wider region. Can be cost-effective if you plan several day trips. Go wherever you want, whenever you want.
Cons: You need to be comfortable driving in Mexico. Insurance requirements can be confusing — Mexican law requires Mexican car insurance, so check what your rental includes. Speed bumps (topes) are frequent on the highway and can be severe. Police stops occasionally occur. Parking in Playa del Carmen can be difficult.
Best for: Confident drivers, families planning extensive exploration, long-stay visitors, and anyone who wants the freedom to reach remote cenotes and beaches without tour groups.
