Tulum is becoming one of Mexico’s biggest LGBTQ+ tourist destinations

According to Gay Cities, Tulum is becoming one of Mexico’s most important tourist destinations. What should LGBTQ+ people expect?

In the decade since our last visit to Tulum, the region has grown quite a bit as an influx of tourists has come to this once-sleepy Mexican town.

The Mayan city is located about two hours south of Cancun, making the city’s famed ruins a day trip for its many tourists—as well as those staying all along the stretch of Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen.

Tulum opened its international airport about a year ago, and now Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport (TQO) boasts service from a dozen airlines, including American, Delta, JetBlue, and United. We flew in from Chicago’s O’Hare, and the flight time was 3.5 hours, an easy option for gaining roughly 50 degrees in temperature during March in the Midwest.

The airport was bright, airy, and easy to move through. Our immigration experience was fast, taking less than 15 minutes.

The nearby Mayan Ruins are a must; the spectacular archeological remnants of the weathered black temple and surrounding structures are perched on a cliff above a stretch of picture-postcard tropical waters, providing a stark contrast.
