The University of the Arts of Yucatán (UNAY) held the Conference to Promote Advanced Film Studies, an initiative that seeks to consolidate a regional film movement with its own identity.
During the inauguration, Rector Domingo Rodríguez Semerena emphasized the urgency of concrete actions to promote filmmaking. “We want to generate a meaningful film movement that represents our cultural identity and strengthens our values as a society,” he stated.
As part of the efforts to strengthen filmmaking in the region, a collaboration agreement was signed between UNAY and the Yucatán Delegation of the National Chamber of the Film Industry, which will open spaces for reflection, analysis, and production.
In addition, the panel discussion “Dialogue in Favor of the Creative Industries” was held, with the participation of representatives from government, academia, and independent filmmakers. In this space, the challenges and opportunities of the audiovisual sector in the region were discussed.
During the event, lectures were given that addressed key topics for the training of filmmakers. The most notable was the talk “Art, Between Ego and Fear,” led by Professor Jonathan Hellwig, who spoke about artistic expression as agents of social change.
For his part, Dr. Juan de Dios Barrueta Rath, director of UNAY Film, presented the EGEDA certificate (awarded by the Entity for the Management of Audiovisual Producers’ Rights, Collective Management Society), highlighting the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and defending the interests of audiovisual producers in Mexico.
The event concluded with a screening of 13 short films—documentaries, animations, and fiction—created by first-generation students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Film. These works were shown alongside a discussion where the young filmmakers shared their creative, technical, and narrative processes.
UNAY is positioned as a benchmark in film education in southeastern Mexico, promoting cinema with local roots, national reach, and a transformative vocation.
