Profepa closes real estate project in Kinchil, Yucatan

Due to environmental damage, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) ordered the temporary closure of the “Sustainable Residential Totem” real estate project in the municipality of Kinchil and also seized heavy machinery that was being used.

The closure is due to the lack of authorizations for environmental impact, land use changes, and the devastation of a large area of lowland rainforest at kilometer 20 of the Kinchil-Celestún highway.

The residential project contemplated the urbanization of more than 2 million square meters, which entailed the clearing of native vegetation in an ecologically “sensitive” area.

The temporary closure, while the corresponding investigations are conducted and legal responsibilities are determined, has been welcomed by local Ejidatarios (communal landowners) and environmental groups in Kinchil, who for months have denounced land invasions and indiscriminate logging by real estate developers in the area.

Profepa indicated that the case will remain under investigation, and those involved could face administrative or criminal sanctions, in addition to the possibility of permanent closure if the situation is not regularized.
