A growing concern has emerged across the country as cases of scabies continue to rise.
According to data from the Federal Ministry of Health (SSA), Yucatán ranks among the top 10 states with the most cases of this contagious disease.
While scabies affect both men and women, statistics show that women are disproportionately affected, making up 57 out of every 100 reported cases nationwide. In fact, in 27 of Mexico’s 32 states, scabies is predominantly a female issue.
In Quintana Roo, the fifth state with the most women diagnosed with scabies, there have been 208 reported cases as of March 15. Yucatán follows closely behind, ranking ninth with 137 confirmed cases.
Scabies are caused by tiny spider mites called Sarcoptes scabiei and spread rapidly through close person-to-person contact in families, daycare centers, schools, nursing homes, or prisons. When a case is detected, it’s essential to treat the entire family or close contacts to prevent further transmission.
In Yucatán, an average of 20 cases are reported per week, with some weeks seeing as many as six or seven new cases daily. The highest weekly number was recorded from February 9-15, with 47 confirmed cases (six or seven per day).
Similarly, in Quintana Roo, the worst week saw 49 scabies cases reported between February 28 and March 6.
Scabies can occur anywhere on the body but are most common in skin folds such as the armpits, around the waist, nipples, navel, or genitals. It’s essential to diagnose scabies early, as it can be easily treated with medications prescribed by a doctor.
While some states have seen an increase in scabies cases, others are experiencing a decline. Nationwide, there were 35,844 reported cases in 2023, followed by a 7.4% drop to 30,408 in 2024. However, the incidence of scabies is on the rise in Campeche.
Prevention is key when it comes to combating this contagious disease. The Mayo Clinic recommends washing clothes, towels, and sheets with hot water and soap, placing unwashable items in sealed bags for a week, and thoroughly cleaning and vacuuming homes where someone has been diagnosed with scabies.
By being aware of the risks and taking necessary precautions, individuals can protect themselves and their loved ones from this debilitating condition. If you suspect you or a family member may have scabies, it’s crucial to consult a doctor immediately to avoid further transmission.
