Scammers arrested in Mérida with counterfeit Bills: Drugs Found on Them

In recent days, several people, especially those who run businesses, have reported being scammed after receiving counterfeit bills as payment for products and services. They have even shared videos recorded by security cameras to identify a single individual, whose face has gone viral on social media.

However, it wasn’t until Friday at 2:38 p.m. that the Yucatán Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported on its X account that its officers arrested three people in possession of marijuana and counterfeit bills in southern Mérida.

Although the faces of the alleged criminals in the shared image are hidden to protect their identities due to the upcoming judicial process, many people on social media have identified one of the detainees as the viral business scammer in Mérida with counterfeit bills.

In its statement, the Yucatán SSP reports that state police were conducting routine surveillance at the Xmatkuil police station in Mérida when they received a call to respond to a citizen report of a disturbance on the street.

However, upon arriving at the scene, they observed two men and a woman verbally attacking each other.

“During a preventive search, the three were found to have small nylon bags containing cannabis, a scanner, and several counterfeit 200- and 500-peso bills.”

Social media reports indicate that taxi drivers from platforms were also victims of the detainees, receiving payments in counterfeit currency.

The viral videos were recorded by security cameras installed in businesses in the Poligono 108 and Las Américas neighborhoods in Mérida, Yucatán, where a subject accused of attempting to pay with a counterfeit bill is observed.

The bulletin indicates that the suspect is Poul Francisco “N,” originally from the State of Mexico; while Gonzalo “N” and Lilian Andrea “N” are originally from Yucatán. Both the individuals and the seized items were handed over to the competent authorities.
